Project Description
The Quantico Marina located at the Quantico Marine Base was refurbished during 2003 by Epsilon Systems. During this refurbishment two new pier sections were installed, piers “A” and “C” increasing the boat slip capacity of the marina from 102 boats to 159 boats. In addition, the entire marina electrical system was replaced with new wiring and breakers including the installation of 92 new pier pedestals.
Hurricane Isabel damaged significant portions of the marina piers both to the new piers sections as well as the existing sections. The damage included damage to many pier pedestals, electrical connection boxes, and pier wiring. The initial on-site assessments indicated that pier A can be repaired, piers B and D required replacement, and portions of pier C can be repaired while other portions of pier C required replacement. The pier piles are undamaged and can be reused in future marina restoration. The galvanized coating on many of the pier piles was rubbed away by tidal action and needed to be spot recoated.
The marina owners, MCCS Quantico requested that the marina be restored to full, pre–Isabel operational condition through the most economical series of repairs and reconstruction. The contracted scope of work for the full marina restoration included:
- Pier A – repair existing pier decking, repair or replace damaged pedestals, and restore electrical power to all sections of the pier including the marina office and fueling pier. Spot repair areas of pier piles where the galvanized outer coating has been scraped away.
- Pier B – Replace existing pier with a new structure of the same design of new pier section C. Repair or replace damaged pedestals and install new electrical system for the entire pier. Spot repair areas of pier piles where the galvanized outer coating has been scraped away.
- Pier C – Repair or replace damaged pier sections. Repair or replace damaged pedestals and install electrical power to the entire pier. Spot repair areas of pier piles where the galvanized outer coating has been scraped away.
- Pier D – Replace exiting pier with a new structure of the same design as new pier section C. Repair or replace damaged pedestals and install new electrical system for the entire pier. Spot repair areas of pier piles where the galvanized outer coating has been scraped away.
- West Wall – Repair west wall including gangways, pedestals, and electrical.
- Electrical Connections Boxes – Repair or replace electrical connection boxes transmitting marina power from Virginia Power transformer connection.
- Demolition – The contractor is responsible for the proper disposal of damaged marina equipment and will provide to the marina any retrograde material that may be useful as future marina spares.
